Shopify Canvas and your theme

Facts checked against Shopify's help center on . Theme counts are live from the shopinfo.app database, last refreshed .

As of October 8, 2026, Shopify Canvas opens only themes developed by Shopify and custom themes. Third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store are not supported. A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates and cannot be downloaded. shopinfo.app tracks 2 current Shopify-built themes that qualify today, and 322 current Theme Store themes from 127 other developers that do not yet.

What Canvas is

Canvas is a design surface inside the Shopify admin where merchants build or restyle a theme by working with Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant. Shopify announced it on October 1, 2026. Shopify's changelog describes it as rolling out to existing stores over the coming days, while the help center describes it as early access that is available only to certain stores. It is available only on desktop devices and on plans that include theme customization, and staff need the Online store, Themes, Edit code permission to open it.

Which themes open in Canvas

What a Canvas-edited theme gives up

Shopify's requirements page lists these limits. Each line is a near-verbatim quote.

  • "A theme that you edit in Canvas doesn't receive theme updates."
  • "You can't download the theme files for a theme that you edited in Canvas."
  • "You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas."
  • "You can't customize a theme for different markets in Canvas."
  • "You can't translate theme content directly in Canvas."
  • "You can't use a rollout to edit a theme that you edited in Canvas."

Duplicating a theme into Canvas leaves the original in your theme library. The copy can be edited only in Canvas, the original only in the theme editor, and changes to one do not flow to the other.

If your store runs a third-party theme

  • You cannot open that theme in Canvas today. Your theme developer's updates continue to arrive through the theme editor as before.
  • Starting a Shopify theme in Canvas means starting over. Nothing from your current theme's settings or sections carries across.
  • Shopify told theme developers it is working on third-party compatibility "before Canvas begins to become the default editor" and gave no date.
  • Apps that rely on app blocks or app embeds do not appear in a Canvas-edited theme until Shopify adds that support.

How shopinfo.app labels Canvas support

  • A theme whose developer field is Shopify is labeled Supported.
  • Every other Theme Store theme is labeled Not supported yet.
  • The label appears in the Quick Info panel of each theme page, in the theme's Markdown mirror, in its JSON-LD as a PropertyValue named "Shopify Canvas support", and in the API lookup response under canvas.
  • Each label carries the date the facts were last checked. When Shopify changes Canvas theme support, the wording and the date change together.
  • shopinfo.app does not test Canvas against individual themes. The label restates Shopify's published rule, nothing more.
