# Shopify Theme Glossary

Definitions of common terms used on shopinfo.app and across the Shopify theme ecosystem.

## Base Theme

The primary version of a Shopify theme that serves as the foundation for all preset variations. Base themes contain the core functionality and design system. Examples include Dawn, Prestige, and Brooklyn.

## Presets (Style Presets)

Pre-configured variations of a base theme with different color schemes, typography, layouts, or styling options. Presets allow merchants to start with a customized look without manual configuration.

## Theme Store ID

A unique numerical identifier assigned to each theme in the Shopify Theme Store. Used in theme URLs and for tracking themes across updates.

## Online Store 2.0 (OS 2.0)

Shopify's modern theme architecture introduced in 2021, featuring improved customization through sections and blocks throughout the entire store. OS 2.0 themes offer greater flexibility without code changes.

## Mega Menu

An advanced, multi-column dropdown navigation menu that displays multiple categories, subcategories, featured products, and promotional images all at once. Reduces clicks to purchase by showing the entire catalog structure.

## Quick View

A feature that allows customers to view key product details, images, variants, and add-to-cart functionality in a popup without leaving the collection page. Can reduce clicks to purchase by 40-50%.

## Sticky Header

A navigation header that remains fixed at the top of the screen as users scroll down the page. Ensures the main navigation menu, search bar, and shopping cart icon stay visible and accessible.

## Color Swatches

Visual color options displayed as clickable colored circles or squares rather than a text dropdown menu. Shows exactly what each color variant looks like.

## Product Filtering

Advanced search and filtering system that allows customers to narrow down product collections by multiple criteria such as price range, size, color, brand, or material.

## Predictive Search

An auto-suggest search feature that displays instant results as customers type their search query. Shows product suggestions, categories, and search term completions in a dropdown.

## Sticky Add to Cart

A fixed 'Add to Cart' button that stays visible as customers scroll down product pages. Removes friction from the buying process by keeping the purchase action always accessible.

## Ajax Cart (Slide-out Cart)

A shopping cart drawer that slides in from the side of the screen when customers add items. Allows viewing and modifying cart contents without leaving the current page.

## Core Web Vitals (CWV)

A set of standardized performance metrics developed by Google to measure user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). These metrics impact search rankings and conversions.

## Vintage Theme

Older themes built before Online Store 2.0 that use Shopify's previous theme architecture. While still functional, vintage themes have limited customization capabilities compared to OS 2.0 themes.

## Sections

Modular building blocks in Shopify themes that contain specific content or functionality. Sections can be added, removed, reordered, and customized through the theme editor without code.

## Blocks

Smaller customizable units within sections. Blocks allow fine-grained control over content layout and appearance within each section.

## App Blocks

Special blocks provided by Shopify apps that can be added to Online Store 2.0 themes through the theme editor. Allows seamless integration of third-party functionality without code modifications.
